About Sichuan

Sichuan Province, short for Shu, is situated in the southwest of China, embracing the eastern part of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Sichuan Basin. The province is 486,000 square km large with population 87.26 million (2007) consisting of different nationalities such as Han, Yi, Zang (Tibetan), Miao, Hui and Qiang. There are 32 cities, 3 minority nationality autonomous prefectures, 120 counties in Sichuan Province.

Sichuan Province has tremendous climatic difference resulting from the physical variation. In the eastern basin it is subtropical monsoon climate characterized by warm winter and hot summer, early spring and rainy autumn. It is wet and foggy and has little sunshine. The western part of Sichuan provinces has temperate or subtropical plateau climate, while the southern part of Sichuan shows marked variation in climates in the mountains and canyons.

Sichuan was referred to in ancient Chinese sources as Ba-Shu (巴蜀) as an abbreviation of the kingdoms of Ba and Shuwhich existed within the Sichuan Basin.Sichuan's capital of Chengdu is home to a large community of Tibetans, with 30,000 permanent Tibetan residents and up to 200,000 Tibetan floating population.The Eastern Lipo, included with either Yi people or Lisu people as well as the A-Hmao also are among the ethnic groups of the provinces.

The Li Bai Memorial, located at Zhongba Town of northern Jiangyou County in Sichuan Province, is a museum in memory of Li Bai, a Chinese poet in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), at the place where he grew up. It was prepared in 1962 on the occasion of 1,200th anniversary of his death, completed in 1981 and opened to the public in October 1982. The memorial is built in the style of the classic garden of the Tang Dynasty.

The "four educations" refers to pre-school education, primary education, secondary education and higher education. The "7 levels" refers to kindergarten, primary school, junior high school, senior high school, higher college education, undergraduate education and postgraduate education.

The Sichuan Basin has a humid sub-tropical monsoonal climate, with mild winters, hot summers, long frost-free period, plentiful rainfall and mist, high humidity, and less sunshine. Its average temperature in July, the hottest month, is 25-29oC; in January, the coldest month, 3-8oC. The Western Sichuan Plateau with its plateau climate has lower temperature and less rainfall than the Sichuan Basin, both of which differ again in the southern and northern sections of the plateau.
